It's crucial to prioritize their safety while traveling in South Africa. This page serves as your guide to understanding the legal requirements and best practices for transporting pets by car. Let's ensure every adventure is a safe and enjoyable one for both you and your pet.

Laws & Rules of the Road in South Africa for Pets

Leaving pets unattended in a Vehicle

Animal Protection Act (Act No. 71 of 1962): This prohibits animal cruelty and or subjecting animals to any situation that can result in injury and death. This Directly relates to leaving any pets in a vehicle alone and unattended for any period of time

Separation from Driver at all times

Regulation 308(1): This regulation states that no driver shall permit any person, animal, or object to occupy a position in or on the vehicle that hinders the driver's control over the vehicle's movements, signalling, or stopping/slowing down.

Avoid danger of potential Projectiles

In the event of an accident, any hard objects within the vehicle may become dangerous projectiles. This includes hard-bottomed covers or separators for pet areas.

At Boss Beds, we prioritise the safety of your pet. That's why we exclusively design and manufacture car hammocks without hard bottoms. This ensures that in the unfortunate event of an accident, there are no rigid surfaces that could potentially harm your furry friend or any passangers

Pet Visibility

The driver and or passenger/s should maintain a clear and unobstructed view of the pet during operation. This allows the driver to quickly assess the pet's well-being and address any potential distress.

This is why our hammocks have a clear view mesh in the middle. Allowing for when to quickly and easily see theirs while the vehicle is in operation

Pets in the front seat

While not explicitly prohibited by law, transporting pets in the front seat is strongly discouraged due to significant safety concerns. Pets in the front seat can distract the driver, increasing the risk of accidents. Moreover, in the event of a collision, airbag deployment can seriously injure or even kill a pet.

For this reason we do not supply any items for the front seat of a Vehicle

Seatbelts and or safety harness

It is recommend that all pets inside a vehicle are restraint at all times via a pet friendly seat belt or harness. This helps in the prevention of pets accidentally leaving the confines of the vehicle and or moving around the vehicle and distracting the driver.

Driver Responsibility

The South African Road Safety Act emphasizes the driver's responsibility for ensuring the safety of all occupants within the vehicle, including pets. This includes taking necessary precautions to prevent distractions and injuries caused by unrestrained animals.

Breaks in a trip

It is advisable to take breaks every now and then when traveling with pets as the trip may be stressful for them.

Small breaks allow them to relax a little as well as, allows for them to take a quick pee or potty break
